Hydroelectric Wicket Gate Repair and Restoration

When an entire set of wicket gates wears out of spec, a hydroelectric plant does not just lose efficiency. It loses control. And when the OEM answer is months of lead time, that is not a solution. That is a problem on top of a problem. Here is how CMMC fixed it.

Challenges

An entire set of wicket gates had bent and worn down to dimensions and strength below the plant’s requirements. Gates in that condition do not steer water cleanly, which puts efficiency and control at risk. The obvious path, ordering OEM replacements, came with the usual problems: limited availability and long lead times the plant could not afford.

Solution

Rather than wait on new parts, CMMC restored the gates the plant already had. The process was to straighten each gate, machine a specified amount of material off every surface, overlay all surfaces with 304 stainless, then machine the parts back to their original specifications. The stainless overlay did more than rebuild dimensions. It gave the wetted surfaces a tougher, corrosion-resistant finish built to last.

Results

The full set was delivered on time and on specification. The plant got its gates back to original without the wait a new set would have meant, and the customer was very happy with the outcome. The volume of gates and the amount of welding and machining on each made this an extensive job, and holding every component inside tolerance came down to experience and knowledge.
