Keeping Pulp and Paper Lines Moving with Rapid Reverse Engineering and 3D Scanning
When a critical rod end and clevis assembly began to fail at a leading paper mill in the Southeast, the maintenance team knew downtime was not an option. They needed a partner who could capture the existing geometry, engineer an accurate replacement, and deliver parts on time to start the new week on schedule.
CHALLENGES
The worn assembly could not be easily removed for measurement, yet the mill needed precise replacement components that would fit and perform correctly the first time. Any delay in reverse engineering or fabrication would risk extended shutdowns, lost production, and added cost for the customer.
SOLUTION
CMMC mobilized quickly with a mobile 3D scanner and captured the rod end and clevis assembly in position, gathering the data needed without disrupting surrounding equipment. From those scans, the team produced detailed drawings and moved straight into emergency fabrication and machining, adjusting shop priorities and putting in the extra hours to meet the customer’s timeline.
RESULTS
The project kicked off on a Wednesday, and by Monday at 7:00 a.m., the new components were scanned, built, delivered, and ready for installation. The mill started the week with equipment back online and a proven partner they can trust for fast, accurate reverse engineering, 3D scanning, and emergency repairs when it matters most.
